2. James LAWSON
James arrived in Australia in 1852 on the ship "David McIver". He went to the Bendigo goldfields which were then being opened, James mined there for 3 years, from there went to Taradale where he worked for 3 years also. He was successful in both places and made a considerable sum of money. He then revisited his native country, where he remained for a few years. During his visit to Ireland he got married to Ellen Foley and in 1860 returned on the "Champion of the seas" to the land of his adoption and settled near Macedon, where he remained engaged in farming persuits up till his death. In 1886 he owned a house and 268 acres at Mt Alexander Road Bullengonork Riding Gisborne. He was of a quiet and retiring disposition and never took an active part in public affairs, but the integrity of his character was recognised by all who knew him. Adevout catholic he use to read "The Catholic Advocate" and would say "this is the paper that gives the Protestants the divil".
